VIS 1440 Sound Design
This course will introduce students to the technical aspect of recording, editing, processing, and mixing audio for use in video production. Students will learn about best practices in capturing audio, industry standard hardware, and editing professional audio for output.

Outcomes
- Understand and apply audio recording best practices including signal-to-noise ratio, peaking, distortion, and low signals. Understand and apply different microphone styles for various applications. Understand industry standard resolution and file types including sample rate and bit depth.
- Utilize industry standard hardware for recording audio, including cables, connectors, and audio interfaces.
- Understand and utilize industry standard audio editing software for cleaning up recordings. Combine multiple audio recordings to output a professional mix with an understanding of compression, peaking, and correct decibel levels for each track. Demonstrate how sound shapes the story and impacts the visuals.
- Students will understand how to use audio to tell a story. Understand how to use diegetic, non-diegetic, and trans-diegetic audio to complement the visuals. Use sound effects, Foley recordings, and music to create a rich audio mix.
